Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo
WHO: Mission Carmel was founded by Father Junipero Serra. It is the site of his shrine and final resting place.
WHAT: The mission was named after Saint Charles Barromeo, a 16th century cardinal and archbishop of Milan, Italy. It is the most authentically restored of all the California missions.
WHERE: Mission Carmel is located about 120 miles south of San Francisco in the Carmel Valley, about a half mile inland from the Pacific Ocean.
WHEN: The mission was established June 3, 1770. It was the second of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous tribe of Native American peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area. The mission was the headquarters of the California missions from 1797 to 1833.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of Ohlone/Costanoan people, under the direction and design of the Franciscan priests.
