HUNTERERS-GATHERERS
- Hunter-gatherers are humans that obtain most or all of their food by foraging; gathering wild plants and hunting wild animals; different from agricultural societies that rely on domesticated species.
- According to archaeological evidence, this strategy was used by Homo erectus about 1.8 million years ago; and from its appearance around 200,000 years ago, by Homo sapiens.
- Most hunter-gatherers live in temporary settlements; following the plant and animal foods they need to survive. Some, like the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast and the Yakuts, lived in particularly rich environments, allowing them to stay in one place. (i.e. supplied by fish, from ocean, year round)
- A common characteristic in the Hunter-gatherers; is the women doing most of the gathering; while the men concentrate on the big game hunting.(New evidence supports that in some groups, women were hunters, too)
- Evidence suggest that big-game hunter-gatherers crossed the Beiring Strait from Asia into North America over a land bridge that was there between 47,000-14,000 years ago.
