JUPITER
WHO – The planet ‘Jupiter’ is named after the Roman king of the gods.
WHAT – It is the first of the two giant gas planets of the Sun, and is the largest of all the planets.
It would take over 1300 Earth’s to equal the size of Jupiter.
WHERE – Jupiter is the fifth planet orbiting the Sun, every 11.9 years.
WHEN – Mankind has recognized Jupiter as a planet since ancient times.
HOW – Early astronomers easily observed Jupiter since it is often the third brightest object in
the night sky. After telescopes were invented, they were surprised to find that it had four
moons! US spacecraft Pioneer 10 flew by Jupiter in 1972 and Voyager 2 flew by in
1979. The Galileo spacecraft arrived in 1995 and sent a small probe into Jupiter.
Interesting Facts: Jupiter is mostly made of hydrogen gas, and may only have a
very small solid core at its center. if Jupiter had been 75 time bigger,
it would have become a second sun.
It has a prominent feature called the Great Red Spot, which
may be a huge storm system larger than the Earth.
