WHAT: It is the last of the terrestrial planets of the Sun.
WHERE: Mars is the 4th planet orbiting the Sun, every 687 days.
WHEN: Mankind has observed and recognized Mars as a planet since ancient times.
HOW: We have learned about Mars from early astronomers. They thought they could see ‘canals’leading many to believe that the planet was inhabited. It was first visited by US spacecraft ‘Mariner 4’ in 1964 and by USSR spacecraft ‘Mars 2’ in 1971.
Interesting Fact: Mars has been nicknamed the ‘Red Planet’ because of the color of its soil.
It sometimes has dust storms that cover the entire planet.
