Mission San Buenaventura
WHO: Mission San Buenaventura was founded by Father Junipero Serra, and was the last one he founded.
WHAT: The mission was named after Saint Bonaventure and nicknamed “Mission by the Sea”.
WHERE: The mission is located at 211 East Main Street, Ventura, California. The city of Ventura is named after the mission.
WHEN: The mission was founded on March 31, 1782. It was the ninth of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of the Chumash native tribe of the area; under the design and the direction of the priests.
