Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa
WHO: Mission San Luis Obispo was founded by Father Junipero Serra.
WHAT: The mission was named after Saint Louis of Anjou the bishop of Toulouse, and nicknamed “Prince of the Missions” , “Mission in the Valley of Bears”, and the “The Accidental Mission”
WHERE: The mission is located 751 Palm St., San Luis Obispo, California. The city of San Luis Obispo is named after the mission.
WHEN: The mission was founded in 1772. It was the fifth of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of the Salinan native tribe of the area; under the design and the direction of the Franciscan priests.
