Mission San Raphael Arcangel
WHO: Mission San Raphael Arcangel was founded by Father Vicente Francisco de Sarria as a medical hospital.
WHAT: The mission is named after Saint Raphael. The nickname of the mission is “Mission of Body Healing”.
WHERE: The mission is located at 1104 5th Avenue in San Rafael, California. The city of San Rafael was named after the mission.
WHEN: The mission was originally founded on December 14, 1817 as a medical hospital. Then it was given full mission status on October 19, 1822. It was the twentieth of the twenty-one missions.
WHY: This mission was not originally created like the other missions, but rather as a hospital for purpose of treating and healing the sick Native Americans.
HOW: The mission was built with the labor of the Native Americans living in the area, under the direction of the Franciscan priests. In 1870 all of the original mission buildings were torn down; the current chapel is a replica built in 1949.
