Mission Nuesta Senora de la Soledad
WHO: Mission Nuestra Senora de la Soledad was founded by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen.
WHAT: The mission was named the Our Lady of Solitude and is also called Soledad mission.
WHERE: The mission is located about 75 miles south of San Francisco near the opening of the San Lorenzo river.
WHEN: The mission was founded on October 9, 1791. It was the thirteenth of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of the Chalon, Esselen, and Yokut native tribes of the area; under the design and the direction of the priests.
