Mission Santa Cruz
WHO: Mission Santa Cruz was founded by Father Fermin Lasuen.
WHAT: The mission was named after the Holy Cross, not after a Saint like most of the other missions. It was nicknamed “The Hard Luck Mission”.
WHERE: Mission Santa Cruz is located at 130 Emmett Street, Santa Cruz, California. The city of Santa Cruz was named after the mission.
WHEN: The mission was founded in August 28, 1791. It was the twelfth of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of the Awaswas, Ohlone, and Yokuts native tribes of the area; under the design and the direction of the Franciscan priests.
