Neptune

Neptune

WHO – The planet ‘Neptune’ is named after the Roman god of the sea.

WHAT – It is the second of the two giant ice planets of the Sun.

WHERE – Neptune is the eighth planet orbiting the Sun, every 165 years.

WHEN – Neptune was discovered by astronomer Johann Gall in 1846, based on
a prediction by French mathematician Urban Le Verrier.

HOW – The planet is too far away to be visible to the eye. After visiting Uranus,
US spacecraft Voyager 2 flew by Neptune in 1989. No other spacecraft
has visited the planet since then.

Interesting Fact: Because it is so far from the Sun, Neptune is very cold
(about -360 deg F) but also very windy.
Neptune has faint rings, and 14 moons.
