Mission San Antonio de Padua
WHO: Mission San Antonio de Padua was founded by Father Junipero Serra.
WHAT: The mission was named after Saint Anthony of Padua, and nicknamed “Mission of the Sierras”.
WHERE: The mission is located at 1 Mission Creek Rd, Jolon (near Monterey) California.
WHEN: The mission was founded on July 14, 1771. It was the third of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of the Salinan native tribe of the area; under the design and the direction of the Franciscan priests.
