Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana
WHO: Mission San Fernando was founded by Father Fermin Lasuen.
WHAT: The mission was named after Saint Ferdinand; King of Spain; and was nicknamed “Mission of the Valley”.
WHERE: The mission is located at 15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd in San Fernando, California. The city of San Fernando is named after the mission.
WHEN: The mission was founded on September 8, 1797. It was the seventeenth of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of the Tataviam and Tongva native tribes of the area; under the design and the direction of the priests.
