Mission San Gabriel Arcangel
WHO: Mission San Gabriel was founded by Fray Angel Francisco de Sonera and Fray Pedro Benito Cambon.
WHAT: The mission was named after the Archangel Gabriel, and is nicknamed the ‘Godmother of the Pueblo of Los Angeles’.
WHERE: The mission is located at 428 South Mission Drive in San Gabriel, California. The city of San Gabriel was named after the mission.
WHEN: The mission was founded on September 8, 1771, the Feast Day of the Birth of Mary. It was the fourth of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of the Tongva native tribe of the area; under the design and the direction of the priests. The mission is known for the Moorish influence of its appearance, different from all other CA missions.
