Mission San Jose
WHO: Mission San Jose was founded by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen, successor to Father Serra.
WHAT: The mission was named after Patron Saint Joseph.
WHERE: The mission is located at 43300 Mission Blvd. in Fremont, California (and not in the city of San Jose).
WHEN: The mission was founded on June 11, 1797. It was the fourteenth of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of the Bay Miwok, Coast Miwok, Lake Miwok, Patwin, Tamyen, and Yokut tribes in the area; under the design and the direction of the priests.
