Mission San Luis Rey de Francia
WHO: Mission San Luis Rey was founded by Father Fermin Lasuen.
WHAT: The mission was named for King Louis IX of France, and nicknamed “King of the Missions”.
WHERE: The mission is located at 4050 Mission Ave., San Luis Rey, California.
WHEN: The mission was founded in June 12, 1798. It was the eighteenth of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded for the continued religious conversion of the indigenous peoples. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built by the labor of the Luiseno tribe of the area; under the design and the direction of the Franciscan priests.
