Mission Santa Clara de Asis
WHO: Mission Santa Clara was founded by Father Junipero Serra of the Franciscan order.
WHAT: The mission named for Saint Clare of Assisi, the founder of the Order of the Poor Clares.
WHERE: The mission is located at 500El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA. It is part of the campus of Santa Clara University, the oldest university in California. The city of Santa Clara was named after the mission.
WHEN: It was founded on January 12, 1777. It was the eighth of California’s twenty-one missions.
WHY: It was founded to promote the Spanish territories and to convert the Native Americans to the catholic faith. It also provided a focus for Spanish settlement in the area.
HOW: The mission was built with the labor of the Tamyen and Ohlone/Costanoan peoples, under the design and supervision of the founding priests. It is amazing that some of the plants on the University campus are from early mission days.
