Mission Santa Ines
WHO: Mission Santa Ines was founded by Father Estevan Tapis.
WHAT: The mission was named after St. Agnes of Rome. It is known as one of the best preserved of the California missions. It’s nickname is the ‘Hidden Gem of the Missions”.
WHERE: The mission is located in Solvang, California.
WHEN: It was founded on September 17, 1804 as the nineteenth mission. The original buildings were destroyed by an earthquake in Dec 1812. New buildings were built and dedicated in July 1817.
WHY: The goal of the missions was to convert the Native Americans to Christianity as well as establish Spanish settlements.
HOW: The mission was built with the labor of the Chumash tribe, under the design and direction of the Franciscan Priests. Water-powered grist mill and fulling mills were added by 1821.
