Uranus
Uranus
WHO – The planet ‘Uranus’ is named after the Greek god of the sky.
WHAT – It is the first of the two giant ice planets of the Sun.
WHERE – Uranus is the seventh planet orbiting the Sun, every 84 years.
WHEN – Uranus was discovered by astronomer William Herschel in 1781, who at first believed
it to be a comet. It was the first new planet to be discovered.
HOW – The planet is too far and dim to be visible to the eye, even though it is 15 times bigger
than the Earth! Little was known about Uranus until US spacecraft Voyager 2 flew by
in 1986. No other spacecraft has visited it since then.
Interesting Fact: The planet is tilted on its side so it is actually ‘rolling’ in its orbit
instead of spinning upright like the Earth.
Uranus has rings like Saturn, and 27 moons.
